Massage offers specific therapies that promote relaxation, reduce stress, improve circulation, speed healing, improve muscle flexibility and endurance and increase mind body connection. Massage also increases body awareness (coming 'home' to your body) and provides a calming space in today’s hectic and changing world.
Swedish Massage -The most common massage modality. Light to moderate pressure is applied by the therapist's hands, forearms or elbows to manipulate the superficial layers of muscles. The benefits of Swedish massage include; decreased stress and muscle tension, increased state of mental and physical relaxation, improved range of motion and a calming of the parasympathetic nervous system.
Sports Massage - This is a specific form of massage used for pre and post athletic events. Sports massage drains away muscle fatigue, reduces swelling, reduces muscle tension and promotes flexibility. The results of sports massage include: less soreness after a workout or event resulting in a faster recovery time; an avoidance of injury due to more supple muscles; improved performance due to increased range of motion; and a faster injury recovery. The intent of post-event massage is to calm the nervous system, flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time allowing athletes to resume their training routine.
Prenatal Massage - Focuses on the specific muscular needs of pregnancy caused by the change in posture, length of ligaments, tension and weight. Specific techniques can reduce pregnancy discomfort and enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of the mother. Pregnancy cushions and/or pillows are used for body support and comfort during the massage with special attention made to body support and draping. The massage is designed to relieve aches in the back, neck, hips and weight bearing joints.
Myofascial Release - Fascia covers every muscle group and lines body cavities. Tight fascia can restrict muscle movement, causing discomfort or pain. Myofascial Release works to free up tight fascia allowing muscles to move freely. Gentle sustained pressure and movement is applied into the fascia to release fascial restrictions. Myofascial release is an effective therapeutic approach in the relief of cervical and back pain, fibromyalgia, restriction of motion and headaches.
Neuromuscular Therapy - Utilizes very specific massage therapy techniques, including the pressure of trigger points, to reduce or eliminate pain patterns. Alternating levels of concentrated pressure are applied to the spasm or trigger area with fingers, knuckles or elbow. This technique enhances the function of joints, muscles, and movement.
Deep Tissue - Most commonly, deep tissue techniques are applied to one or more areas of the body during an otherwise relaxing body massage. This allows for a full-body treatment with focus to specific problem areas. Deep tissue is often applied slowly with concentrated pressure to trigger points (painful irritated areas in muscles that refer pain to other areas of the body) in order to break the cycle of pain. Deep tissue massage also aims at treating the deeper structures of the body including muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia.
Hot Stone - The use of hot stones for healing dates back to ancient times. Water heated smooth, flat stones are placed on key points on the body. Warm stones are also incorporated into the massage to increase muscle (and mind) relaxation. Warm stone massage is also suited for people who have muscle tension but prefer a lighter massage. The heat aids in the release of muscle tension, allowing the therapist to work the muscles without using deep pressure.
Oncology Massage - Traditional massage therapy is modified in order to safely work with the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment in order to adapt for these side effects, as well as for the disease. Oncology massage requires a properly trained oncology massage therapist in order to provide a safe and effective massage for any person at any stage of their cancer journey: during and after treatment, remission, cure or at the end of life. Massage treatments are designed around the individual's medical treatment diagnosis, comfort, safety and specific needs.
It is common to experience some soreness following your first massage treatment. This is caused by the body’s release of toxins and other impurities previously trapped within the muscles. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water daily will assist the body in flushing out these toxins. Some discomfort is common with deep-tissue massage techniques used to release extreme muscle tension built up over months and years. Please inform the therapist if at any time you find the therapy too intense or painful. Some believe that the deeper the work, the more effective the massage. That isn't necessarily true. Muscle tension can be released often by using the correct technique rather than the depth of the pressure.
I typically use a combination of massage techniques during a massage treatment that best fit the needs and requests of my clients.
